Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Other Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
