Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet will invest $15 billion to establish an AI computing facility in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The facility, that is planned in the harbor town of the city of Visakhapatnam, is set to become a part of Google's global network of AI centres distributed over 12 countries.
"It's the largest artificial intelligence center that we are committing funds to worldwide, excluding the United States," Thomas Kurien stated at an gathering in the capital city of Delhi this Tuesday, noting that the investment is to be distributed across the coming five years.
This declaration comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been encouraging US firms to give priority to local funding.
India's Growing Role in AI Infrastructure
India has emerged as a prime location for AI data centres. India's inexpensive data services and rapidly growing digital audience have made it a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for tech giants.
"This center will bring our pioneering tech solutions to companies and individuals in the nation, accelerating artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress throughout the nation," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
An official contract to conclude the initiative is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government said.
"It constitutes a significant advancement for our state's technological advancement, innovation, and worldwide position," remarked the minister for technology Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will integrate cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and an expanded fibre-optic network.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The project forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to develop six gigawatts of data center capability by 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that accommodate the computing and networking equipment that companies use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.
They contain servers, memory systems and connectivity devices like firewalls and routers, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
Investment Incentives
In Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been offering reduced-cost property and energy to entice worldwide funders.
Sector Expansion
India's data centre industry has expanded quickly over the past five years, crossing the 1GW capacity mark in the year 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 capacity.
