Debunking Venezuela Celebration Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.
AI-generated images claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his capture by the United States have gained countless of views online.
The Way AI Images of the President Emerged Within Hours
Initial fabricated synthetic picture seemingly showing him being escorted off a plane circulated within hours. The graphic was unpublished by any verified government accounts; it was instead posted on X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used the SynthID tool, confirming the image was created or altered with AI tools.
Additional synthetic pictures were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro detained. Discernible logos on the graphics indicate they were posted by an Instagram account named ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms the further pictures were also created or altered AI technology.
Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Persisted
The former US president shared the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following the authentic image was made public, AI-generated images kept circulating but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate the new fake images were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art profile. Once again, SynthID found the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.
