Detonations and Low-Flying Aircraft Heard in Venezuela's Capital Caracas

Accounts circulated of numerous explosions and the sound of low-flying aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of the weekend. The event has led to allegations from the Venezuelan government and demands for global intervention.

Venezuela Accuses United States of Attack

Venezuela's socialist regime has blamed the United States of committing "imperial aggression," claiming that ex- President Trump supposedly ordered attacks against the Latin American nation. In an public announcement, the authorities stated that strikes had targeted Caracas and several other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"The sole aim of this aggression is to gain control of our nation's key assets, notably its petroleum and mineral wealth," the government declared.

Venezuelan officials urged the world to censure the strikes, which it labeled a "clear infringement of international law" that placed numerous of lives in danger.

Reports of Explosions and Military Bases Targeted

Eyewitnesses reported feeling approximately several detonations around 2:00 AM local time. People in different districts reportedly rushed into the streets.

"The earth trembled. It was terrifying. We heard explosions and aircraft in the distance," said one resident.

Smoke was observed billowing from key defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna compound, where leader Nicolás Maduro is reported to have a residence.

Global Reaction

The president of neighboring Colombia, claimed on a social platform that "Right now they are striking Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He called for an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council.

Colombia, which recently became a member of the UNSC, said it would activate operational measures at its border with Venezuela.

Preceding Events

The alleged strikes come after a months-long military buildup by the United States against the Maduro regime. Beginning in last summer, there has been a substantial American military deployment off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a number of air strikes on boats accused of narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's government has announced "a state of emergency" and commanded all national defense measures to be initiated. It has also urged its citizens to protest and "denounce this external attack."

US authorities and the Defense Department did not immediately responded to requests for clarification regarding the reports.
