Generational striker Erling Haaland will get an opportunity in his premier global event this coming summer, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

And the 25-year-old Premier League striker did it in sensational style, registering 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifiers - netting at least once in all those encounters.

This establishes him as the leading goalscorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying in all continents.

Additionally, his squad's 4-1 win in Italy on Sunday, with Haaland netting two goals, means they will be competing in next summer's World Cup in the American continent.

The striker commented post-game: "I'm happy, but mostly relieved. There's a lot of pressure and factors, and I feel it. But it's fun."

It will be only their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since Euro 2000.

What Significance Was Haaland's Contribution?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is truly extraordinary.

He has registered 55 goals in 48 matches for Norway.

Furthermore he is only the sixth player ever, and the premier in half a century, to register 50 finishes in fewer than 50 caps.

Norway's previous leading goalscorer was Juve with 33 strikes, who maintained that achievement for 90 years.

In these qualifiers he scored 16 goals - in eight encounters - plus two setup passes.

This amounts to double the goal count any other player has registered in European qualifying.

He stands as the highest scorer in these qualifying matches in any continent, including ones where national sides participate twice as more games.

More than twelve months has gone by since Haaland previously didn't score in a game for Norway.

Squad Contribution Beyond Haaland

However, it's not solely about one player.

Skipper Martin Odegaard, 26, has additional assists than any competitor in European preliminary matches - seven assists.

The Arsenal midfielder has played 67 times for Norway since his first appearance at the tender age of fifteen.

"Pair Haaland's achievements with the reality that in this generation we furthermore feature Martin Odegaard," stated a football expert.

We're a country of five million citizens and we feature both the best striker and I would argue the premier midfielder, absolutely including the best playmakers, in the English top flight.

Historical Significance of Qualification

Initially in a generation Norway fans will experience the excitement of backing their team at an international tournament.

The Scandinavian country competed in the World Cups in 1938, 1994 and 1998, and the 2000 Euros.

His father, Alf Inge, participated in the 1994 World Cup.

Erling has previously said exceeding his dad represented a big career ambition for him.

"Norway will not win the World Cup," Haaland Jr told a global media outlet in recent months.

Avoiding Historical Oversight

Haaland heading to the upcoming World Cup with Norway guarantees he dodges his addition to the collection of iconic athletes who never featured in one.

Three best player awardees never managed to participate in the global tournament.

The Liberian legend, who secured titles with various top teams, represented Liberia - who haven't qualified for a World Cup.

Legendary Red Devils attacker George Best, considered by many as one of football's greatest players, was a Ulster footballer during the mid-century period when they failed to qualify.

Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano featured for three countries - Spain, Argentina and Colombia - but couldn't reach a World Cup with any of them.
