Food Benefits Set to End for Tens of Millions During Ongoing US Government Shutdown

USDA officials stated recently that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed next month amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse had reached three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed appeals by more than two hundred House Democrats urging the department to tap into contingency funds to pay for November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

Widespread Impact

Tens of millions of people rely on these food benefits, as reported by federal data. In certain states, including one southwestern state, reliance on the program affects 21% of residents.

Documents reviewed by journalists revealed that federal authorities decided against using emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Partisan Impasse

Republicans and Democrats are still at odds about the way to support and resume the federal government.

Comments by the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the White House could have acted to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility made moves earlier to get ready to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would reopen the federal government.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from multiple regions issued emergency declarations recently to make money available to address food insecurity expecting SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
