Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Passing on unneeded gifts could be viewed as slightly impolite – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to sold via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date is yet to be set, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The items are said to be kept in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The detailed catalog has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. By law, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a time in office.
