Immigration officers have arrived in the North Carolina city as part of the federal government's growing crackdown on unauthorized immigration, according to government announcements.

The operation, called "Charlotte's Web Operation", was revealed on the weekend, with representatives stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be the focus in the urban area.

"Our department is deploying Homeland Security personnel to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and eliminate security risks," a spokesperson announced.

Local officials, including Charlotte's mayor, issued a collective announcement opposing the initiative, saying it was causing "unnecessary fear and uncertainty" in the resident base.

The Department of Homeland Security said they are implementing the operation because the state has not complied with the around 1,400 ICE detainees, meaning they had been released due to "sanctuary policies".
