Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
