United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning Roster with An additional 11 Nations

Industrial alcohol caution sign

British authorities has added eleven further nations to its public alert list regarding the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated spirits.

This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple serious events such as the deadly demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.

Official Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office official a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.

"In case something feels off, like a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help right away."

The complete list of nations noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
